Age gaps in relationships often raise questions, particularly among Christians wondering whether Scripture places limits on the difference in age between a husband and wife.
The straightforward answer is that the Bible gives no specific rule about an acceptable age gap between two adults who marry. Instead, biblical teaching about relationships focuses much more heavily on faithfulness, character, wisdom, love and responsibility.

Abraham and Sarah are one biblical couple whose ages are explicitly given. In Genesis 17:17, Abraham is described as 100 years old and Sarah as 90 when God promises that they will have a son.
That establishes an age difference of approximately ten years. Scripture mentions their ages because of the extraordinary circumstances surrounding Isaac’s birth, not because it is teaching about age-gap relationships.
Still, their marriage is never criticized because Abraham was older than Sarah. The age difference itself simply isn’t presented as a moral problem.
What About Mary and Joseph?
Mary and Joseph are frequently mentioned in discussions about age differences, sometimes with claims that Joseph was considerably older than Mary.
The Bible, however, does not tell us their ages.
Later traditions and historical speculation have produced different ideas about Joseph’s age, but these should not be presented as biblical facts. The Gospel accounts instead emphasize Joseph’s righteousness, his treatment of Mary, and his obedience to God.
Therefore, Mary and Joseph cannot reliably be used to establish a biblical position either for or against large age gaps.
What Does the Bible Prioritize in Marriage?
Although Scripture doesn’t establish an age-gap formula, it does give Christians numerous principles relevant to choosing a spouse and building a marriage.
Shared Faith
Second Corinthians 6:14 warns believers against being “unequally yoked” with unbelievers. The immediate passage isn’t specifically giving marriage instructions, but Christians have long applied its broader principle of spiritual partnership to marriage.
Elsewhere, Scripture more explicitly assumes that Christians should marry “in the Lord” (1 Corinthians 7:39).
From a biblical perspective, spiritual compatibility therefore receives far more attention than whether spouses are close in age.
Love and Respect
Biblical descriptions of marriage emphasize sacrificial love, faithfulness and proper treatment of one’s spouse. Ephesians 5, for example, calls husbands to love their wives sacrificially, while Christian teaching repeatedly emphasizes humility, patience and concern for others.
First Corinthians 13 famously describes love as patient, kind and not self-seeking.
None of these commands changes according to whether spouses are two years or twenty years apart.
Wisdom and Maturity
The Bible repeatedly praises wisdom, self-control, honesty and sound judgment. Those qualities matter when considering marriage as well.
An age difference doesn’t automatically indicate maturity or immaturity. Two people of similar ages can have very different levels of responsibility and judgment, just as an older person isn’t automatically wiser or more trustworthy.
The more important questions concern how the individuals actually behave.
Does the Bible Say a Large Age Gap Is Sinful?
There is no biblical passage establishing a maximum permissible age difference between adult spouses.
Therefore, it would be difficult to argue from Scripture alone that a marriage becomes sinful simply because one spouse is significantly older than the other.
That doesn’t mean age should never matter practically.
A substantial difference can place two people at different stages of life. Couples may need to consider questions involving children, health, careers, retirement, energy levels and long-term caregiving. Those are legitimate considerations, even if they aren’t evidence that the relationship itself is morally wrong.
Likewise, an age difference should never be used to dismiss concerns about coercion, manipulation or exploitation. A healthy marriage requires genuine consent and responsible conduct regardless of the spouses’ ages.
What Should Christians Look for Instead?
Rather than asking only, “How many years apart are we?” Christians considering marriage can ask more meaningful questions.
Do we share our fundamental beliefs and values? Is this person honest and trustworthy? Do we treat each other with respect? Can disagreements be handled maturely? Are both people entering the marriage willingly and with a realistic understanding of its responsibilities? Does the relationship encourage rather than undermine our faith?
Those questions are much closer to the concerns Scripture repeatedly emphasizes.
Age Is Not the Biblical Measure of a Marriage
The Bible neither commands spouses to be close in age nor establishes an acceptable numerical gap. Abraham and Sarah demonstrate that an age difference could exist within a biblical marriage, while the ages of other famous couples, including Mary and Joseph, often aren’t provided at all.
That silence shouldn’t be turned into a rule in either direction.
A large age difference does not automatically make a relationship wise, and it does not automatically make it wrong. Christians still need to exercise judgment about compatibility, maturity, motives and circumstances.
