<\/p>\nThis morning, at 72 years old, I found myself in the McDonald\u2019s drive-thru, taking my time with my order. Suddenly, the young woman behind me got impatient, honked her horn, and started mouthing words at me. Clearly frustrated.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Instead of letting it ruin my morning, I decided to respond with kindness. When I reached the first window, I paid for both my order and hers. The cashier must\u2019ve told her because as I drove off, I saw her lean out of her window, wave, and mouth, \u201cThank you\u201d\u2014looking just a little embarrassed. But here\u2019s where it gets good\u2014when I reached the second window, I showed them both receipts and took her food too! Now, she had to go all the way back to the end of the line and start over.<\/p>\n
Now, before you judge me too harshly, let me explain. This wasn\u2019t about being mean or petty. It was a playful lesson wrapped in a little humor. I drove into the McDonald\u2019s parking lot, parked my car, and waited. I had a feeling she might want to have a word with me. Sure enough, about fifteen minutes later, I saw her park and march toward my car, clearly flustered but also curious.<\/p>\n
I rolled down my window before she could even knock.\u201cWhy did you do that?\u201d she asked, half-laughing, half-exasperated.I smiled and handed her a fresh cup of coffee I had bought inside. \u201cBecause, young lady, patience is a virtue, and sometimes, a little inconvenience makes us realize that.\u201dShe stared at me for a second, then burst out laughing. \u201cOkay, fair enough. But I was really hungry!\u201d<\/p>\n
I chuckled. \u201cWell, that just means your meal will taste even better when you finally get it.\u201d<\/p>\n
She shook her head, took a sip of the coffee, and sighed. \u201cYou got me good, old man.\u201d\u201cName\u2019s Walter,\u201d I said, extending my hand.She shook it. \u201cI\u2019m Mia.
