The courtroom doors opened so violently that the sound echoed off the high walls.<\/p>\n

Everyone turned.<\/p>\n
Don Chema did too.<\/p>\n
And for several seconds, the old man forgot that a judge was sitting in front of him.<\/p>\n
He forgot the prosecutor.<\/p>\n
He forgot the accusation.<\/p>\n
He forgot the possibility that he might spend the rest of his life behind bars.<\/p>\n
Because standing in the doorway were three women he would have recognized anywhere.<\/p>\n
\u201cSof\u00eda\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
His voice barely came out.<\/p>\n
Behind her stood Valeria.<\/p>\n
And beside Valeria was Luc\u00eda.<\/p>\n
His three daughters.<\/p>\n
The three little girls he had raised in a two-bedroom concrete house in Ecatepec with secondhand clothes, beans, tortillas, borrowed textbooks, and more love than money could ever measure.<\/p>\n
Except they weren\u2019t little girls anymore.<\/p>\n
Sof\u00eda was thirty-nine now.<\/p>\n
Valeria was thirty-four.<\/p>\n
Luc\u00eda was thirty-two.<\/p>\n
And judging by the expression on Principal Robles\u2019s face, at least one of them was exactly the person he had been praying would never enter that courtroom.<\/p>\n
\u201cYour Honor,\u201d Sof\u00eda said, slightly out of breath, \u201cplease don\u2019t issue a ruling yet.\u201d<\/p>\n
The judge lowered his gavel.<\/p>\n
The prosecutor stood immediately.<\/p>\n
\u201cYour Honor, this proceeding cannot simply be interrupted\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI know exactly how proceedings work.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sof\u00eda walked down the center aisle.<\/p>\n
Her heels struck the floor with a confidence that made people move aside.<\/p>\n
Don Chema stared at her.<\/p>\n
She wore a dark tailored suit and carried a thick leather case beneath one arm.<\/p>\n
He had seen her dressed professionally before, of course. He kept photographs of all three daughters beside his bed.<\/p>\n
But sitting there in his old blue suit, frightened and exhausted, he suddenly remembered another Sof\u00eda.<\/p>\n
A little girl with two crooked braids sitting at the kitchen table while he tried to explain fractions after working a fourteen-hour shift.<\/p>\n
He remembered her first school uniform.<\/p>\n
Her first lost tooth.<\/p>\n
The night she had a fever and he stayed awake until sunrise with a wet cloth against her forehead.<\/p>\n
And now she was walking toward him.<\/p>\n
\u201cPap\u00e1.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sof\u00eda stopped beside his chair.<\/p>\n
Don Chema\u2019s eyes filled with tears.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat are you doing here?\u201d<\/p>\n
She crouched beside him.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat you taught me to do.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cShowing up when someone needs me.\u201d<\/p>\n
That broke him. \nHis shoulders shook once.<\/p>\n
Then again.<\/p>\n
\u201cI didn\u2019t want you girls involved.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI told the neighbor not to call you.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe know that too.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou have your lives. Your work. Your families.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sof\u00eda reached for his rough hand.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd we have those lives because of you.\u201d<\/p>\n
Behind her, Valeria was already crying.<\/p>\n
Luc\u00eda wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n
Luc\u00eda was staring directly at Principal Robles.<\/p>\n
And there was something in her expression that made Chema uneasy.<\/p>\n
Not anger.<\/p>\n
Recognition.<\/p>\n
Judge Elena Vargas cleared her throat.<\/p>\n

\u201cMiss\u2026?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cSof\u00eda Hern\u00e1ndez.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd your relationship to the defendant?\u201d<\/p>\n
Sof\u00eda stood.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe is my father.\u201d<\/p>\n
The prosecutor looked down at his documents.<\/p>\n
\u201cAccording to the records\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHe adopted me when I was an infant.\u201d<\/p>\n
The courtroom became quiet.<\/p>\n
Sof\u00eda placed her leather case on the defense table.<\/p>\n
