Tara looked at her.<\/p>\n

Lily glanced at me.<\/p>\n

Then said:<\/p>\n

\u201cHelp somebody else get to Friday.\u201d<\/p>\n

I turned away.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t want either of them to see me cry.<\/p>\n

The remaining money had gone to sixteen other people.<\/p>\n

Much smaller amounts.<\/p>\n

A bus pass.<\/p>\n

A pair of work pants.<\/p>\n

Groceries for a mother starting a new job.<\/p>\n

Phone service.<\/p>\n

Childcare.<\/p>\n

Shoes.<\/p>\n

Gas.<\/p>\n

Lunch.<\/p>\n

Not random gifts.<\/p>\n

Not internet strangers.<\/p>\n

Every dollar had been used to remove some small obstacle standing between somebody and an opportunity.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

That didn\u2019t mean Lily had handled it responsibly.<\/p>\n

She was still sixteen.<\/p>\n

She had still given away more than four thousand dollars without telling me.<\/p>\n

But the story I had imagined that morning was gone.<\/p>\n

Nobody had stolen from my daughter.<\/p>\n

Nobody had scammed her.<\/p>\n

She had found an old index card.<\/p>\n

And somehow, four years after Michael died, it had taught her something about him I had never known myself.<\/p>\n

On the drive home, I finally asked:<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n

Lily stared out the window.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo what?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat Dad did.\u201d<\/p>\n

My hands tightened around the steering wheel.<\/p>\n

She looked down.<\/p>\n

\u201cDad can\u2019t help anybody anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

I said nothing.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just wanted to know if I could do one thing he would recognize.\u201d<\/p>\n

That broke me.<\/p>\n

I pulled into a parking lot.<\/p>\n

Put the car in park.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Then sat there.<\/p>\n

Lily immediately looked worried.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m okay.\u201d<\/p>\n

She almost smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cDad would say you didn\u2019t answer the question.\u201d<\/p>\n

I laughed through tears.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe would.\u201d<\/p>\n

I reached for her hand.<\/p>\n

Then stopped.<\/p>\n

There was something important I still needed to say.<\/p>\n

\u201cLily.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat you did was beautiful.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her eyes filled.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut it was also reckless.\u201d<\/p>\n

She nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou gave away four thousand dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMoney you worked for.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd you hid it from me until the morning we were supposed to buy your car.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not going to punish you for helping people.\u201d<\/p>\n

She looked at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I\u2019m also not going to pretend that generosity means consequences disappear.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe three thousand dollars I promised toward your car is staying exactly where it is.\u201d<\/p>\n

She nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I\u2019m not replacing the money you gave away.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t expect you to.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you save your portion again, we\u2019ll start shopping.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd next time you decide somebody needs eleven hundred dollars in work boots, housing, and transportation\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

A tiny smile appeared.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026you tell your mother.\u201d<\/p>\n

She laughed.<\/p>\n

\u201cDeal.\u201d<\/p>\n

I squeezed her hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour father apparently helped people quietly.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lily nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo maybe you inherited that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her smile faded into something softer.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut he was also forty-two.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re sixteen.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPainfully long.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen what?\u201d<\/p>\n

I pictured Michael sitting at this table.<\/p>\n

The wrong song lyrics.<\/p>\n

The ridiculous grin.<\/p>\n

The man who had apparently spent years quietly getting strangers to Friday.<\/p>\n

Lily looked at the picture.<\/p>\n

\u201cSeventeen.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd he would have been furious that you beat his record.\u201d<\/p>\n

She laughed so hard she covered her face.<\/p>\n

I laughed too.<\/p>\n

And for a moment, Michael didn\u2019t feel quite so far away.<\/p>\n

The key ring remained empty.<\/p>\n

No first-car key.<\/p>\n

Not yet.<\/p>\n

But I realized something as I watched Lily return to the listings.<\/p>\n

That morning, I had thought the keychain was going to mark the day my daughter became more independent.<\/p>\n

I had imagined handing it to her beside some battered little car and thinking about how proud Michael would have been.<\/p>\n

Instead, she had already shown me something much bigger.<\/p>\n

She had worked for something she wanted.<\/p>\n

Lily went back to work the following weekend.<\/p>\n

She started counting tips again.<\/p>\n

The eighty-six dollars became one hundred forty.<\/p>\n

Then two hundred.<\/p>\n

Then more.<\/p>\n

And whenever Lily complained about how slowly her car fund was growing, I would point at the card.<\/p>\n

She would roll her eyes.<\/p>\n

Then she would smile.<\/p>\n

Because the car could wait.<\/p>\n

Those seventeen people couldn\u2019t.<\/p>\n
