The \u201cM\u201d is the beginning of your title.<\/p>\n

Traditionally, formal wedding response cards might provide a line that looks something like:<\/p>\n

Rather than printing \u201cName:\u201d on the response card, stationers could elegantly provide the first letter all of those common titles shared:<\/p>\n

Of course, modern etiquette is considerably more flexible.<\/p>\n

Not everyone uses one of those traditional titles.<\/p>\n

Some people prefer another honorific.<\/p>\n

If only your name appears on it, don\u2019t automatically add another guest.<\/p>\n

If the invitation includes your partner\u2019s name, both of you are invited.<\/p>\n

If it specifically says \u201cand guest,\u201d you may generally bring a guest.<\/p>\n

And if children aren\u2019t named or otherwise included in the invitation, don\u2019t assume they\u2019re automatically part of the reservation.<\/p>\n

An RSVP isn\u2019t an opportunity to expand the guest list.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s clearer.<\/p>\n

Online RSVP systems have made things simpler still, often displaying the invited guests by name and asking them to select whether they will attend.<\/p>\n

So if you\u2019re designing your own invitations, there\u2019s no requirement to use the traditional \u201cM.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s an etiquette convention, not a rule.<\/p>\n

A straightforward \u201cName\u201d or \u201cGuest Name(s)\u201d field works perfectly well and may save your guests some confusion.<\/p>\n
