probably why the legendary diaper incident became so memorable.

Because eventually, even my mother had enough.

The details have been repeated so many times in our family that the story has developed the rhythm of folklore.

<div class="google-anno-skip google-anno-sc" tabindex="0" role="link" aria-label="Plan class="wp-block-paragraph">The infamous backyard fire has been making us laugh ever since.

I like imagining the scene now: my usually practical mother standing there watching one final diaper surrender to the flames, experiencing perhaps the smallest and strangest rebellion of her adult life.

No manifesto.

Sometimes it hasn’t slept.

Sometimes it is standing beside a washing machine at an unreasonable hour wondering how one small human generates so much laundry.

And sometimes love reaches its limit, marches into the backyard, and sets a diaper on fire.

That doesn’t make the love smaller.

It makes it human.

My mother’s patience wasn’t infinite.

No one’s is.

What amazes me now isn’t that she finally lost patience with one terrible diaper.

It’s how many thousands of times she didn’t.

How many unpleasant tasks she completed without turning them into evidence of her sacrifice.

How often she quietly chose responsibility when nobody was watching.

My friend has since survived many more diaper disasters.

Most parents do.

You adapt.

You learn tricks.

You discover what can be washed and what should perhaps be respectfully surrendered to history.

And eventually the baby grows.

The diapers disappear.

The pail gets thrown away.

Years pass.

But the care remains.

That’s why the old diaper pail has become something larger in my memory.

It is ridiculous, yes.

It is disgusting.

It is still one of our favorite family class="wp-block-paragraph">A monument to invisible work.

To the things parents do so routinely that their children don’t realize anyone is doing them at all.

To generations of mothers and fathers whose greatest acts of devotion were rarely dramatic enough to become stories.

And to my mother, who never needed to tell us how much she loved us because, day after day, she was washing the evidence.

The fire is
