Severe complications kept me under far longer than expected. When I finally drifted back to consciousness, my throat burned and my head throbbed.<\/p>\n

I stared at photos of our house on my phone, wondering whether I\u2019d even recognize my marriage when I got home.<\/p>\n
Nurse Clara kept me sane. She\u2019d bring my evening medication and stay a few extra minutes, sitting on the edge of the chair beside my bed, asking questions she didn\u2019t need the answers to just so I wouldn\u2019t be talking to the ceiling.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe was so devoted before the surgery,\u201d she said one evening, more to herself than to me. \u201cSomething must have frightened him terribly.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stood in the doorway of my own house, completely unable to speak.<\/p>\n

Then I stood there in my living room for a moment, my prepared speech somewhere behind me.<\/p>\n
In the kitchen, the dark cabinets that had made the room feel like a cave were gone. The broken drawer I had asked Rowan to fix for the better part of a decade had been replaced. The counter was new. The whole room was new.<\/p>\n
And sitting on the marble island was a small, folded index card in Rowan\u2019s familiar handwriting.<\/p>\n
I picked it up.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou were right about the yellow. It does look like morning.\u201d<\/p>\n
I read it twice. Then I stood there in the kitchen with the note in my hand and let my anger get confused.<\/p>\n
In our bedroom, the walls were painted the warm white I\u2019d wanted since we moved in. On the nightstand was another card.<\/p>\n
