I thought I was taking my 86-year-old grandmother on the happiest trip of her life.<\/p>\n

She had never seen the ocean.<\/p>\n

So, after a particularly good year at work, I decided to surprise Grandma Rose with a vacation to Florida.<\/p>\n

She protested, of course.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecca, sweetheart, you should spend your money on yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI am spending it on myself,\u201d I told her. \u201cI get to watch you see the ocean for the first time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her eyes filled with excitement.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you think we\u2019ll see mermaids?\u201d<\/p>\n

I laughed.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnly if the pilot decides to land in the ocean.\u201d<\/p>\n

She patted my hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, then I hope he\u2019s adventurous.\u201d<\/p>\n

That was how we ended up on the plane.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, our seats weren\u2019t together.<\/p>\n

Grandma had seat 24B.<\/p>\n

I was six rows behind her.<\/p>\n

When we reached row 24, I immediately noticed something was wrong.<\/p>\n

The woman in the window seat, 24A, had completely taken over Grandma\u2019s space.<\/p>\n

She had her designer handbag wedged beside her and was leaning so far over the armrest that nearly half of Grandma\u2019s seat was gone.<\/p>\n

A middle-aged man sat in 24C, looking extremely uncomfortable.<\/p>\n

\u201cExcuse me,\u201d I said politely. \u201cThat\u2019s my grandmother\u2019s seat.\u201d<\/p>\n

The woman didn\u2019t even look up from her phone.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m in 24A.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know. But you\u2019re occupying 24B.\u201d<\/p>\n

She finally glanced at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t fit with the armrest down.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy grandmother has severe arthritis. She needs the full seat.\u201d<\/p>\n

The woman shrugged.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe should have booked first class.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at her.<\/p>\n

Grandma gently tugged my sleeve.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s all right, darling. I\u2019ll manage.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, you won\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

I called a flight attendant.<\/p>\n

A woman named Cheryl arrived and immediately understood the problem.<\/p>\n

\u201cMa\u2019am,\u201d Cheryl said to the passenger, \u201ccould you please move closer to the window?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYour seatmate needs her assigned space.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI paid for this seat.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo did my grandmother,\u201d I replied.<\/p>\n

The woman rolled her eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t make me responsible because some old woman decided to travel.\u201d<\/p>\n

The cabin seemed to go silent.<\/p>\n

Grandma\u2019s face fell.<\/p>\n

I felt my anger rising.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou owe my grandmother an apology.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t owe anyone anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cheryl tried again, but the woman refused to move.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want to get involved,\u201d he muttered.<\/p>\n

Eventually, Grandma squeezed herself into the remaining space.<\/p>\n

Her shoulder was pressed against the woman.<\/p>\n

Her cane barely fit beside her.<\/p>\n

I hated leaving her there, but the flight was full, and I had no choice.<\/p>\n

Before I returned to my seat, Grandma smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t worry about me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you sure?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI survived eighty-six years,\u201d she whispered. \u201cI can survive one rude woman.\u201d<\/p>\n

I reluctantly walked away.<\/p>\n

Five minutes after takeoff, the seatbelt sign switched off.<\/p>\n

The woman froze.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYour skirt,\u201d Grandma repeated. \u201cIt\u2019s tucked into the back of your shapewear.\u201d<\/p>\n

The woman\u2019s eyes widened.<\/p>\n

She immediately reached behind herself.<\/p>\n

Then she stood.<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s when she realized what had happened.<\/p>\n

Her skirt had indeed ridden up and become caught, exposing far more of her bright pink undergarment than she would have wanted anyone to see.<\/p>\n

Several passengers gasped.<\/p>\n

Then someone laughed.<\/p>\n

The woman frantically pulled her skirt down.<\/p>\n

Her face turned bright red.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh my God!\u201d<\/p>\n

She grabbed her handbag and hurried toward the rear of the plane.<\/p>\n

Grandma leaned back in her seat.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell,\u201d she said, \u201cmy eyesight isn\u2019t as bad as everyone thinks.\u201d<\/p>\n

The passengers around her burst into laughter.<\/p>\n

Even the middle-aged man in 24C finally smiled.<\/p>\n

Cheryl arrived with the pillow she had promised Grandma.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you all right?\u201d<\/p>\n

Grandma nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cPerfectly.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then she looked toward the back of the plane.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think our neighbor may need a moment.\u201d<\/p>\n

I hurried toward Grandma as soon as I could.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou okay?\u201d<\/p>\n

She smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou knew?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI noticed when we were boarding.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at her.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou could have told her earlier!\u201d<\/p>\n

Grandma shrugged.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe wasn\u2019t ready to listen.\u201d<\/p>\n

I laughed.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are unbelievable.\u201d<\/p>\n

She squeezed my hand.<\/p>\n

Grandma\u2019s eyes sparkled.<\/p>\n

By the time we landed, the woman had stayed mostly in the rear of the plane.<\/p>\n

When we finally reached the beach, I helped her walk toward the water.<\/p>\n

And I\u2019ll remember what she told me as we walked back toward the hotel.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecca?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m glad I waited eighty-six years.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n

She smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause I got to see the ocean with you.\u201d<\/p>\n

And that was the real karma of the day.<\/p>\n

The rude woman got embarrassed for five minutes.<\/p>\n

But my grandmother got a memory she would treasure forever.<\/p>\n
